SolMan by Sol Solutions

This is a small portable power generator that delivers up to 1,200 watts of AC power and includes one 135 watt photovoltaic panel, three 100 amp/hour deep cycle sealed batteries, charge controller, watt meter, 1200 watt inverter/charger, and external AC/DC outlets.
1,200 watts isn’t a whole lot of electricity by grid standards but it’s enough to run drills, saws, small compressors, sanders, grinders and many other power tools. It would also work great for powering a frugal tiny house. The basic unit can run about 8-hours with a 250 watt load and 2-hours with about a 1000 watt load. If you need more power it can be expanded with additional solar panels and batteries.
It is a bit heavy, 300 pounds, mostly due to the batteries. Good thing it’s on wheels. The main disadvantage is initial cost. The basic SolMan runs about $4,000. But over time it pays you back by avoiding fuel costs. It also runs silently and requires very little maintenance.

A couple of weeks ago we had a “Meeting of the Tiny Minds” and Bill Kastrinos of Tortoise Shell Homes told Jay, Stephen, Michael and me (of Tumbleweed Houses) about this great solar solution that was out there. What if there was a simple solution to this and all you had to do was plug and play? SolMan a company based in Willits, California, has come up with just that kind of solution. They call their system the “one small, easy to move, all in one integrated unit, ready to point towards the sun at your best location, and deliver up to 1200 watts of AC power, and 12 volts DC power, and even charge all your Ni-Mh smaller batteries.” This little unit is on heavy duty bicycle wheels so you can have your tiny Tumbleweed home in the shade and easily roll your solar unit where it gets the most sun.
The SolMan portable solar generator can be expanded to add another solar panel easily, and even a third. The second one sits on its own stand and can be adjusted as needed. If you choose to a third panel, there is a bracket that attaches all three together so that the system can be folded up for moving. ©2010 Tumbleweed Houses
The cool thing about the SolMan is that if your needs grow, so can the SolMan. You can add another solar panel easily and even a third. The second one sits on it’s own stand and can be adjusted as needed. If you chose to get a third panel they have a bracket that attaches all three together that can be folded up for moving.
No need to deal with big panels and connecting them to your roof and knowing you have to park your home in the sun to get the most voltage to your system.
SolMan Portable Mobile Solar Power Generators
SolMan Mobile Solar Generator with lithium battery storage is showcased at West Coast Green 2010’s Innovation Pipeline producing a whopping 2000 Watts of electricity. Chaz Peling, CEO Sol-Solutions, Inc., is interviewed by Product News Channel at a annual West Coast Green, a world’s heading interactive discussion upon immature creation for a built environment.

Earlier in the fall I had the opportunity to go to Solfest which met in Ukiah, California this year. I met Chaz Peling of Sol Solutions and we looked at a tiny house modified from plans donated by Jay Shafer of Tumbleweed Tiny Houses.

Mobile Solar Generators: Saving the Earth, One SolMan at a Time

Mobile generators are necessary for countless applications, from powering shelters during a natural disaster to providing energy to heat a rural cabin in the woods. But what are the environmental implications of this technology? Although it would seem that generators are much less harmful than the traditional grid power of a home or business, they carry just as many, if not more negative environmental effects.
Typical mobile generators run on gas. Any fossil fuel burning device emits greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and ozone into the atmosphere, causing health issues. The process of burning fossil fuels is also the driving force behind global climate change. Additionally, mobile generators produce large amounts of noise pollution. Noise pollution harbors many negative effects for wildlife, causing them stress, decreasing the usability of their habitat, and disrupting the naturalness of ecosystems. Noise pollution also creates just as many negative effects on humans.

Solar generators offer another solution for temporary jobsite power.

The crew at Frank Schipper Construction needed a new way to run jobsite equipment. They had to remove the transformer that provided power at a new project in Santa Barbara, Calif., and because they were working in a residential neighborhood with strict noise ordinances, a diesel or gas generator was out of the question.
Then superintendent Tom Weinberg came across solar generators. "We have all the tools running off of it, and the job trailer is run off of it, and the lighting is run off of it," he says. "I like it better, because it has power all night long ... with the diesel, you have to turn it off and you have no power. Security lighting is plugged into it, and that would not work on a diesel generator."
And now, a solar-powered generator

Sol Solutions’ SolMan transportable, can generate 2,000 watts
Chaz Peling, CEO of Sol Solutions, unveiled the company’s new lithium battery solar-powered generator at the Solar Sonoma Expo, where his SolMan generators powered most of the booths.
WILLITS AND SANTA ROSA – A North Bay startup has an alternative to the portable gasoline generator, and it’s getting the attention of green expos around the West Coast.
Sol Solutions’ SolMan is a solar-powered unit that can generate 2,000 watts and store them in a powerful lithium battery.
