TEN TIMES MORE DURABLE
EASY TO INSTALL
A light-emitting diode (LED) is a semiconductor chip that emits light when conducting current. LED's are very versatile due to their ability to emit nearly all spectrums of light, leading to their nearly universal adoption as a light source for a wide range of applications
from: status indicator lights, to traffic signals, to today's advanced direct replacement LED light sources. LED lighting was invented in the early 1900’s, however did not make it into products until the 60’s.
Now 100 years after they were invented, LED lights are making their way into the commercial and residential space.

The true cost of light- The lamp economy
Most people in today’s economy are worried about the price of the light bulb. What they really should be paying attention to is the price of light. The price of light includes the...
Cost of the light bulb
Cost of operating the lights over their lifetime
Ongoing costs to maintain or replace them when they buzz or go bad
Costs on the environment and disposal of toxic mercury found in flourescent lighting
When you compare the true price of fluorescent tubes vs. LED technology, the “true” price of light points to LED technology for "true" savings.
Convenience store case study- what would you do with $12,000 savings?

Let’s take a look at a convenience store operating 24 hours, 7 days a week.
...They have 250, 4’ fluorescent tubes.
...Each tube typically uses 35 watts
...Each fixture has a ballast that uses approximately 3 watts.
Based on California’s rate of .15 kw/hr this results in the store paying about $1,000 for their lighting per month.
By simply replacing the fluorescent tubes with LED technology, the store would immediately realize a 60% reduction of their lighting operating costs bringing the fee from $1,000 down to $400 per month, saving $7,200 a year. Based on 50,000 hours lifetime capacity the lights in a 24/7 store will last approx. 5 years. The store would save $36,000 over these five years.
How is this reduction possible? Because the LED lights use only 15 watts per tube vs. 35 watt per fluorescent tube. Additional savings from the maintenance in not having to replace tubes or ballast for five years isn't even factored into this equation.
In the case of LED technology there is an upfront capital expenditure required to get this kind of return on investment.
The convenience store owner chose to finance the $22,000 it cost them in LED lighting. Their monthly finance fee was $400 per month for five years resulting in $24,000.
The convenience store pays $24,000 to save $36,000 resulting in an overall saving of $12,000.
This convenience store now has $2,400 a year or $12,000 over five years to invest these funds into other energy saving equipment, solar, solar hot water, etc. to further reduce the costs of doing business.
Below is a chart comparison of the costs associated with fluorescent tubes vs. LED technology over this 5-year period.

Why are LED’s so much better than incandescent and fluorescent lighting?

Efficiency
Traditional incandescent bulbs waste 98% of their energy producing wasted heat.LEDs on the other hand produce very little heat in order to maintain brilliant light saving and even assist in cooling costs.
Long Life
When you look at the costs to run traditional incandescent bulbs
they simply don't make sense:
One - 100 Watt bulb costs approximately $43 dollars to run per year at 12 hours per day. Since an incandescent bulb only lasts 1000 hours, you would have bought at least 4 replacement bulbs over the course of the year, bringing your total cost for just one light fixture to $50. Durability
LEDs have no filament or tube to break thus they are very durable. Even if you happen to drop or mishandle one,
you will not be left with a mess of broken or shattered glass.Compare this to...
One - 10 Watt LED costs approximately $4.30 to run per year at 12 hours per day.
Since it was on for approximately 4000 hours it still has nearly 10 years of life!
Even throughout its entire 11 year life an LED bulb will cost approximately $120
while a traditional fixture using an incandescent bulb will cost nearly $550!
